The Future is Food is a Transition Year Unit that has been developed by Real Nation with The Taste Council in collaboration with Bord Bia, food producers, food professionals and chefs. It is designed to introduce students to the food industry in Ireland. The Future is Food helps students to gain a better understanding of the Irish artisan food sector, and how entrepreneurship and innovation have driven this aspect of the food industry. The programme includes lesson plans focussing on topics such as entrepreneurship, food origin and Bord Bia’s Origin Green sustainability programme as well as research, new product development and marketing. It provides a platform for students to build and develop key skills such as communication, working with others, information processing, critical and creative thinking and to enhance personal and social skills. Participating schools will each partner with a local artisan producer, chef or food champion who will help budding student entrepreneurs and innovators to develop their own unique food product or to work with them on an existing product. With over 150 mentors from the artisan food industry across the country, there is a huge body of expertise available to the students to encourage students to develop an interest in the fast growing artisan food sector.
